1 He was one of the five delegates from South Carolina to the Continental Congress at the time of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence and was one of the four South Carolina delegates to sign that documents. The fifth delegate was Thomas Lynch, father of this delegate. The elder Lynch was ill when the declaration was passed and was enable to sign it. He died at Annapolis, Md., the following December and was buried there. There is a vacant space in the Declaration for his signature.
